Richmond is an ideal area to enjoy a holiday in what is now popularly known as "Herriot Country". Turning right from the drive to the Cottages you are in the Dales and on the road to the Lakes which are a comfortable day trip away. In the Dales themselves you'll find attractive towns such as Hawes and Reeth, Castles including Bolton Castle which imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots, impressive waterfalls at Aysgarth and Muker and beautiful, quiet walks.
Turning left from the Cottages and driving back through Richmond you are just 10 minutes from the A1 offering easy access to Darlington, the home of the railways and the cities of Durham, Ripon and York - famous for their beautiful cathedrals and ancient streets. For the historian there's much of value to be seen. In Richmond, and within an hours drive, you'll find much Viking, Roman and Norman history to dwell on. For those who like to shop - Harrogate, York and Newcastle are all fine shopping centres, markets are also held at Richmond, Leyburn, Barnard Castle and Darlington.
Richmond itself is a town with much history to offer having its own Norman Castle and Viking and Roman connections. Much of the town's architecture is Georgian and regular performances are held at the Georgian Theatre Royal which also has its own museum. The town has two other museums as well as interesting shops around its large cobbled market place and in the winding streets which lead from it.
